What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a measure of a student’s overall academic performance across all semesters and subjects. Unlike GPA which may refer to a single semester, CGPA represents the average of all grade points earned throughout the entire academic program.

How is CGPA Calculated?

CGPA is calculated using a weighted average of grade points, where each subject’s grade point is weighted by its credit hours.

CGPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Sum of all Credit Hours

For example, if you scored a 4.0 in a 3-credit subject and a 3.0 in a 2-credit subject:

Total Quality Points = (4.0 x 3) + (3.0 x 2) = 12 + 6 = 18
Total Credit Hours = 3 + 2 = 5
CGPA = 18 / 5 = 3.60

CGPA vs GPA

GPA (Grade Point Average) typically refers to the grade point average for a single semester or term. CGPA is the cumulative version, calculated across all completed semesters. Most universities report both values on transcripts.

CGPA to Percentage Conversion

There is no universally agreed formula for converting CGPA to a percentage, as different universities use different scales. However, some commonly used formulas are:

4.0 Scale: Percentage = CGPA x 25
10.0 Scale: Percentage = CGPA x 9.5 (commonly used in India)
5.0 Scale: Percentage = (CGPA / 5) x 100

What is a Good CGPA?

On a 4.0 scale, a CGPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered excellent. A CGPA between 3.0 and 3.5 is considered good. Anything below 2.0 is often considered the minimum passing threshold at many universities. On a 10.0 scale, a CGPA of 8.0 or above is typically considered excellent.

Credit Hours

Credit hours represent the weight assigned to a subject based on the number of hours of instruction per week. A 3-credit subject typically meets for 3 hours per week. Subjects with more credit hours have a greater impact on your CGPA because they are weighted more heavily in the calculation.
