How to Calculate How Much Gravel You Need
To calculate gravel quantity, you need three measurements: the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover. Multiply them together to get the volume, then convert that volume to weight using the density of the gravel type you are using.
The Gravel Formula
Weight (tons) = Volume (yd3) x Density (lb/yd3) / 2,000
Depth is typically the smallest measurement. A common recommendation for driveways is 4 inches of gravel. For decorative garden paths, 2 to 3 inches is usually sufficient.

Tips for Ordering Gravel
It is recommended to add 10 to 15 percent extra to your calculated amount to account for settling, compaction, and waste during installation. Always round up when ordering, as running short mid-project is more costly than having a small surplus.
