How Are Meters Converted to Steps?

The conversion from meters to steps uses your personal stride length as the dividing factor. Stride length is the distance covered with each individual step, measured from where one foot lands to where the other foot lands next. The formula is simple: divide the total distance in meters by the stride length in meters per step to get the number of steps. For example, 1,000 meters divided by a stride length of 0.762 meters gives approximately 1,312 steps.

Steps = Distance (m) ÷ Stride Length (m/step)

What Affects Stride Length?

Faster walking naturally extends the stride. A brisk pace adds roughly 10 percent to the base stride, while power walking adds around 22 percent. A slow stroll shortens it by about 10 percent.
Terrain
Uphill walking shortens the stride as steps become smaller and more deliberate. Downhill walking can slightly increase stride length. Soft surfaces such as sand or grass also reduce effective stride length.
